Human Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine consisting of 184 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 23.7 kDa. IL-6 is recognized for its diverse roles in inflammation, immune regulation, and hematopoiesis. As a key mediator of the immune response, IL-6 is produced by a wide range of cells, including T cells, B cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts, particularly in response to infections, tissue injury, or other inflammatory stimuli.
IL-6 exerts its effects by binding to the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R). Upon receptor binding, the complex associates with glycoprotein 130 (gp130), triggering the activation of signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT3, MAPK, and PI3K/AKT. These pathways drive the expression of genes involved in immune regulation, inflammation, and cell survival.
